ABOUT INFINITI
Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Infiniti, But Didn’t Ask.
At Infiniti, we go beyond engineering, beyond the road itself. We travel through an emotional territory with its own unique landscape. Consider this your road map.
1. What does Infiniti mean?
Our name is a promise to our customers. With Infiniti, you experience infinitely more: more performance, more design and more service. This is also reflected in our logo, which symbolizes a road that continues to infinity.
2. What distinguishes Infiniti from other premium brands?
The most important difference is our customer. Rather than trying to be a premium brand for all people, Infiniti makes a more personal statement designed to attract buyers with a similar vision – buyers who thrive on experiences rather than status alone. Infiniti is not about doing what everyone else is doing. It is not about copying traditional, conservative notions of luxury. We will not try to be all things to all people, but everything to some people. We have taken calculated risks to differentiate our models from the predictable offerings that fill the premium car market, creating cars that thrill and exhilarate in a way that is entirely new to customers. Infiniti vehicles have character — each a destination in its own right — with beautiful, warm designs, sometimes even edgy and aggressive, but always distinctive and true.
3. What can I expect from Infiniti?
Infiniti will not just provide vehicles, technology and performance, but also the unique Infiniti sales and service philosophy known as the “Total Ownership Experience”. Great customer service, as embodied in the Total Ownership Experience, is not a marketing initiative or short-term commitment, it is a core part of Infiniti’s DNA. It is the reassurance to customers that they can purchase a new Infiniti in a hassle-free manner, enjoying respect and the confidence that they will be taken care of throughout the entire period of Infiniti ownership. We see a huge opportunity to provide a standard of customer care that is unlike anything else offered in the world today. We will engage customers with experiences tailored around their lives and lifestyles, not just their vehicles themselves. For example, Infiniti was again selected last year in the USA as the brand with the most satisfied customers. We are very pleased that, since our inception, we have always been able to achieve the highest grades in terms of satisfaction – for us this is both a confirmation and an incentive.
4. Where does Infiniti come from?
Infiniti is at home anywhere in the world and our CV is international, like that of many of our customers. Our brand was born in the USA from a Japanese parent, and has continuously improved through its journey around the world.
5. Why has it taken until now to establish Infiniti across the globe?
We believe that doing the right thing is not enough. You have to do the right thing at the right time in order to have success. We have tailored our range of models to meet the needs of a global clientele. The original Infiniti vision of always looking ahead to the next horizon – symbolized by the Infiniti name and badge – continues to shape the brand today. Infiniti is, above all else, both a journey and a destination – a brand where design, performance and customers come together to celebrate the present, and look forward to the products, technologies and experiences still to come.
6. Which models does Infiniti offer?
Infiniti offers a full line of unique and distinctive luxury coupes, sedans and crossovers, along with a full-size SUV. The sporty G Coupes and Sedans come in a variety of styles and engine sizes. The elegant Infiniti M Sedan offers versatility, power and performance across its different models. Infiniti’s impressive line-up of crossovers, including the EX and FX, provide drivers with performance and utility along with aggressive styling and advanced technologies. Finally, the full-size QX, provides its owners with a rugged yet luxurious style, complemented by the limitless power of possibility. Each Infiniti model is fine-tuned for our customers’ unique needs, rigid quality standards and demanding driving conditions.
7. Where are Infinitis built?
Infinitis are built at our Japanese factory in Tochigi and at manufacturing facilities in the south-east United States. Spreading production across the globe guarantees the highest quality. Our Design Center has branches all over the world, so that we have a finger on the pulse worldwide.
8. What does design mean for Infiniti?
Under the direction of Design Director Shiro Nakamura, Infiniti vehicles have developed a powerful design aesthetic – often symbolized by simple brush strokes – known as Vibrant Design. We enjoy designing for life, rather than simply creating mechanical objects. Infiniti design not only reflects Graceful Strength, but also a deep history and a tribute to Japanese tradition. Infiniti design combines modern, progressive luxury with a strong and timeless Japanese heritage. Our design consists of five elements: vibrant colors that captivate, rooting the power of nature, elegant form with motion, an awe-inspiring presence, and an optimistic, progressive attitude.
9. Where can I find Infiniti?
We have selected a very limited number of highly qualified distributors across the globe. In this respect we also remain faithful to ourselves by building cars for individualists and offering them individual service. Many Infiniti retail facilities around the world follow the design concept similar to that of a superior hotel. That is precisely the experience we wish to emulate: our customer is received in the lobby and advised in the lounge whilst the car waits for him in the gallery. We want to show more than just cars, our customer should experience Infiniti in elegant and relaxed surroundings.
10. And what does Adeyaka mean?
The term Adeyaka cannot be translated easily in one word because it means so much more. It stands for luxury, distinction, elegance and a special way of life. It is also about vibrancy and powerful colors that represent boundless possibilities to live your own life. People in Japan smile when they say Adeyaka. This word sums up everything that makes Infiniti what it is, because Adeyaka also means: Take your opportunity; Enjoy making your choice.
The Infiniti approach to safety is threefold: make the drivers life easier, minimize danger, prevent damage/injury. Infiniti Safety Shield is our comprehensive approach to safety. It includes rigorous crash testing, over 50 standard safety features on every vehicle and available advanced safety technologies. Infiniti Safety Shield is designed and developed into every vehicle we build to help protect you and your passengers.
Blind Spot Intervention™ System and Blind Spot Warning - View Video
Another world's first from Infiniti, our optional Blind Spot Intervention™ System (BSI) helps alert you to vehicles in the blind spot area, then actively assist you back toward the center of your travel lane if you begin to move over.
This additional measure of security works together with our Blind Spot Warning system (BSW). BSW illuminates an indicator light to help alert the driver to vehicles detected in the blind spot area, with an additional visual and audible warning when the driver engages the turn signal.
Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
Using the FX’s laser rangefinder, this feature helps alert the driver of an imminent collision by providing a visual and an audible warning.
Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA)
This active safety feature continuously monitors and analyzes closing speeds to a vehicle ahead or to a stationary obstacle. If the driver does not adequately respond to the FCW and a collision cannot be avoided, IBA will automatically engage the brakes to help reduce collision speed and impact, thus mitigating the consequences of the accident.
Distance Control Assist (DCA) - View Video
This system ensures your Infiniti maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front, using the brakes to re-establish a safe distance and even stopping the vehicle if necessary.
Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC)
Whether at freeway speeds or in heavy traffic, the ICC’s laser sensors guarantee you’re never too close to the vehicle up ahead. The latest Full Speed Range version of ICC manages speed and distance right down to a complete halt.
Lane Departure Warning and Prevention - View Video
Lane Departure Warning has been part of Infiniti’s safety story for a while. With the addition of Lane Departure Prevention, the warning is backed with action - slight brake pressure on one side of the car eases it back into line, lane and safety.
Intelligent All-Wheel Drive
Infiniti’s advanced Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system for sedans and crossovers provides outstanding handling in poor conditions such as snow or unmade roads by apportioning torque to the wheels that need it most. It delivers rear-wheel drive performance when you want it and all-wheel drive control when you need it.
Vehicle Dynamic Control with Traction Control System
Infiniti’s stability control system mitigates wheelspin and understeer/oversteer on slippery roads and automatically adjusts brake pressure and torque to help keep the vehicle on its intended path.
Around View™ Monitor - View Video
The Around View™ Monitor takes the idea of a rear parking camera a step further by providing a unique virtual 360 degree bird’s eye view that allows the car to be positioned with ease.
Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS)
AFS uses bi-xenon headlights that turn automatically with the steering wheel to help the driver see around bends at night.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Transmitters inside each wheel monitor air pressure. A warning lamp illuminates automatically if any one tire falls below 75 per cent of normal pressure.
Pop-up Hood
In the event of a pedestrian collision, a small pyrotechnic charge raises the hood to create a potentially life-saving “cushion” on top of the unyielding engine parts.
Infiniti is a full participant in the visionary Nissan Green Program and continues to improve efficiency through technology and weight saving, as well as hybrid and other alternative fuel innovations.
Hybrid concept
Infiniti’s visionary Essence concept car, revealed at the Geneva Auto Show in 2009, combines a potent petrol engine with a new kind of powerful yet compact electric motor, delivering high performance with zero-emissions.
V6 diesel engine
Infiniti will introduce a diesel engine to its 2010 European model line-up, marrying high performance with Infiniti’s lowest-ever carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
Variable Valve Event & Lift (VVEL)
Infiniti’s patented VVEL valve control technology is the very embodiment of efficiency delivering higher torque with lower emissions, even in very powerful engines such as the FX’s 5.0-litre V8.
7-speed automatic with Adaptive Shift Control
Adaptive Shift Control adapts the 7-speed automatic transmission’s shift pattern to match driving style, further boosting efficiency as well as driving enjoyment.
Lightweight aluminum components
Infiniti aluminum adds strength to our automobiles while reducing their weight, boosting both safety and efficiency. For example, aluminum components make the body of the latest FX 3.4 times more resistant to bending than the previous model, significantly improving power transfer, and hence efficiency.
Plasmacluster Ionizer
Along with hi-tech air filters – including one impregnated with allergen reducing grapeseed polyphenol - certain Infiniti models feature the Plasmacluster™ ionizer that generates positive and negative ions to help keep the cabin air clean and fresh.
Whether in design and materials, engineering or manufacturing, advanced technology is the Infiniti way. The result - Infiniti automobiles are smarter to live with, better to drive and more rewarding to own.
Hydraulic Body Motion Control - View Video
Infiniti's world-first Hydraulic Body Motion Control system helps bring sedan-like handling to SUV power and size. It monitors cornering force and distributes variable pressure to either the outer or inner suspension for a more even stance. The result is one you’ll feel with minimized body lean and a smoother ride at all speeds.
Forest Air™ System
It is climate control crafted to recreate the sensation of a clean, natural breeze. Advanced Auto Recirculation™ helps neutralize odors first by closing outside vents when unpleasant scents are detected, and then by cleansing and purifying interior air to remove allergens. The purified air is circulated randomly through upper and lower vents with the gentle ebb and flow of a breeze, rejuvenating and soothing the senses.
Active Noise Control
Intelligent technology uses a microphone in the ceiling to identify undesirable low-frequency engine sounds and neutralizes them with sound waves of the opposite phase. By isolating the unwanted frequencies, Active Noise Control creates a quieter and more peaceful driving experience, yet preserves the more invigorating sounds of engine performance.
Variable Valve Event & Lift (VVEL)
Infiniti’s patented VVEL valve control technology is the very embodiment of efficiency delivering higher torque with lower emissions, even in very powerful engines such as the FX’s 5.0-litre V8.
Scratch Shield paint
Infiniti’s unique “self healing” paint contains a heat-activated resin compound that expands to “fill” fine scratches, making them disappear and maintaining the body’s high gloss finish.
Rear Active Steer
The FX50 is the first Crossover/SUV with rear active steer that boosts agility at low speeds and enhances stability at high speeds.
4WAS - Four-wheel Active Steer - View Video
The 4WAS system optimizes the rear suspension geometry according to steering input and vehicle speed for improved handling and safety.
Continuous Damping Control (CDC)® suspension
Infiniti CDC dampers continuously vary their level of damping to suit driving and road conditions.
Retractable hardtop
The G37 Convertible’s three-piece retractable hardtop is precision engineered to transform the car from coupe to full convertible in just 25 seconds.
Infiniti Intelligent Key
Infiniti’s smart access system identifies your key without it having to leave your pocket or purse, automatically unlocking the car, and setting the seat and steering wheel to the keyholder's personal settings.
Bose® Open-air Sound System
The Infiniti G Convertible's Bose® Open-air Sound System adjusts sound equalization to accommodate for ambient noise, roof position and vehicle speed.
Around View™ Monitor - View Video
The Around View™ Monitor takes the idea of a rear parking camera a step further by providing a unique virtual 360 degree bird’s eye view that allows the car to be positioned with ease.
Climate control seats
Infiniti climate control seats have both heating and ventilation systems to keep you warm on cold days, and cool you off during warmer weather.
In-car information and entertainment system
Infiniti’s information and entertainment system combines hard disk drive navigation, 300 CD Music Box storage, DVD playback, full i-Pod compatibility and 3D graphics; all controlled easily by touch screen, voice command or dashboard/steering wheel buttons.
The Horizon Task Force
The Infiniti story begins in 1985 with the formation of Nissan’s top secret “Horizon Task Force”. Its objective: to create a new performance luxury brand. Literally from scratch, the Horizon Task Force began working on an expansive vision, eschewing the simple re-badging of current vehicles to embrace a new luxury automobile ethic encompassing not only product, but the entire purchase and ownership process. With existing U.S. and European luxury brands already well entrenched in the American marketplace, this endeavour was not only ambitious – it was positively risky.
Work Begins
The Task Force began work in earnest by singling out a handful of leading service corporations for close scrutiny. Customer-centric companies from outside the automotive field like Federal Express, Four Seasons Hotels and Nordstrom department stores began to influence the vision for the Infiniti purchase and service experience. The look and feel of luxury hotels informed the design of the first Infiniti showrooms and could be felt in details such as business card design and packaging. This new customer-centric philosophy – later named the Infiniti Total Ownership Experience – would be applied to service policies as well, and included the then unheard-of amenity of offering free service loan cars.
Infiniti is Born
In July 1987, the Infiniti name was born. The fresh spelling with four “i”s and badge with its two central lines leading off into an infinite point on the horizon symbolized this new luxury performance brand’s desire to be always looking forward – to new horizons, to infinity.
Breaking Ground
Sales officially started on November 8, 1989 when the initial 51 Infiniti dealers in the United States opened their showroom doors for the first time. Infiniti launched in the U.S. with two models: the breakthrough Infiniti Q45 performance luxury sedan, and the driver-oriented M30 performance luxury coupe. With these two models, and the Infiniti Total Ownership Experience, Infiniti soon gained recognition as an industry leader in customer satisfaction, winning numerous awards including the highest rank in J.D. Power and Associates’ Customer Service Index (CSI) study three times, and consistent top three finishes in major independent sales and service studies.
Gaining Ground
Throughout those early years, the Infiniti model line-up and dealer body grew steadily. The exterior and interior design of the flagship Q45 evolved without compromising its exceptional performance or engineering. Though the M30 model was discontinued, the Infiniti G20 compact sports sedan soon made its debut alongside the dramatically styled J30 luxury sedan, I30/I35 performance sedan and the QX4 luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV). Infiniti sales by the end of its first decade were consistently around 75,000 units a year.
Infiniti Flourishes
The new millennium heralded a period of unprecedented growth for Infiniti. Led by visionary executive Carlos Ghosn, the company concentrated on reinvigorating the brand with an altogether new breed of vehicles – cutting edge rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive designs. The results were, in a word, spectacular. Introduced in March 2002, the dramatic, award-winning Infiniti G35 Sedan was soon followed by the G35 Coupe in November, and finally the iconic Infiniti FX in January 2003. Reviews were exceptional and the Infiniti name was soon to be heard amongst those of the leading European marques for design and performance leadership.
The customer response followed suit. Unit sales surpassed the 100,000 milestone for the first time in 2003, hitting 119,000– an increase of 35 percent over 2002 sales. This achievement marked Infiniti as the fastest growing luxury brand in the U.S., and by 2004, cumulative Infiniti sales had topped one million units.
New Models – New Innovations
The Infiniti I35, QX4 and Q45 were gradually phased out between 2003 and 2006, in time for the addition of two new models – the full-size, Infiniti QX56 luxury SUV in January 2004, and the Infiniti M performance luxury sedan in May 2005. By December of 2007, another new member joined the Infiniti family: the Infiniti EX. A combination of seductive design and elegant luxury, the EX (badged EX35) also ushered in an array of advanced high-technology systems such as Around View Monitor, Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) system and Scratch Shield “self-healing” clear coat paint. The second generation FX received its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2008 and heralded the introduction of a new 5.0-litre V8 with 390 horsepower, Infiniti’s most powerful engine yet. The brand’s most recent innovation is the launch of its first Convertible with a metal folding roof which joins the G37 Sedan and Coupe from mid 2009.
Going Global
Infiniti began its period of global expansion in 1996 with sales in the Middle East, followed by entry into Taiwan in 1997. By April 2005, Infiniti accelerated its global expansion plan. South Korea opened up in 2005, followed by Russia in 2006 and Ukraine and China in 2007. Western Europe is the newest region to the Infiniti Global family, opening its doors in late 2008. Today, Infiniti has more than 230 dealers in 15 countries worldwide.
The Journey On
The original Infiniti vision of looking ahead, to new horizons, shapes the brand to this day. Rather than trying to be a premium brand for all people, Infiniti’s is a more personal statement, one that speaks an experiential language concerned with more than mere status.
To quote Carlos Ghosn: “Infiniti is not about doing what everyone else is doing. It is not about copying traditional, conservative notions of luxury. We will not try to be all things to all people, but everything to some people.”
It is this sentiment that underlies Infiniti’s unrelenting passion for creating vehicles whose significance transcends their physical substance - a concept called Graceful Strength:
“We have taken calculated risks to differentiate our models from the predictable offerings that fill the premium car market, offering cars that thrill and exhilarate in a way that is entirely new to customers,” says Mr. Ghosn, “Infiniti (builds) vehicles with character… destinations in their own right – beautiful, warm designs, sometimes even edgy and aggressive, but always distinctive and true.”
The Infiniti Dream
Some dreams are fleeting. Others linger. Very few actually come to life. For over 20 years, the dream of Infiniti has lived and breathed. It has stayed alive because of one thing: an unwavering commitment to the highest levels of performance, luxury and customer care - A commitment to the creation of driving experiences that not only move you, but leave you moved - A commitment to building automobiles that keep the promise of Inspired Performance.
